Wood County Schools is proud to recognize School Bus Driver Appreciation Week, a special time set aside to honor the women and men who safely transport students to and from school each day. These dedicated professionals are an essential part of the school community and play a vital role in supporting student success.

School bus transportation has been a cornerstone of public education for more than a century. What began as horse-drawn wagons in rural communities eventually evolved into the modern, highly regulated school bus system we know today. Since national safety standards were established in 1939—including the now-familiar yellow school bus—student transportation has become one of the safest ways for children to travel.

In Wood County Schools, bus drivers do far more than operate a vehicle. They are often the first school employee a child sees each morning and the last to wish them a good afternoon. Drivers build relationships with students, learn their routines, and help set a positive tone for the school day. For many children, their bus driver is a trusted and familiar presence.

The role also comes with significant responsibility. Wood County school bus drivers navigate changing weather, rural and city routes, and busy traffic patterns, all while managing student behavior and maintaining strict safety standards. Their training and professionalism help ensure that thousands of Wood County Schools' students arrive at school and return home safely every day.

School Bus Driver Appreciation Week is an opportunity for the entire Wood County community to recognize the importance of this work. Without dependable transportation, many students would not have consistent access to school, activities, and essential services.

Wood County Schools extends its sincere gratitude to all bus drivers for their commitment, care, and dedication to the safety and well-being of our students. Their work keeps our schools moving forward each day.
