people in a public space using protective sunglasses to observe a solar eclipse

Dear Wood County Schools’ Families,

On Monday, April 8, 2024, our region will experience a solar eclipse. This is a very exciting event! Wood County Schools will operate on a regular schedule on Monday, April 8, 2024. The timing of the eclipse will occur around the time students are dimissed at the end of the school day. Our goal is to keep everyone safe during this time period.

Wood County Schools has developed precaution protocols for dismissal on April 8.

Teachers will provide students solar eclipse glasses that have the ISO 12312-2 confirmation.

Students should be encouraged to wear the solar eclipse glasses anytime they are looking at the sun. Students wearing the solar eclipse glasses to view the eclipse need to stand still and in one place due to the limited visibility of the glasses when not looking at the sun.

Students should not walk home with the solar eclipse glasses on due to their limited visibility when not looking directly at the sun.

Students who are picked up in a vehicle or ride a school bus will not be released from the school building until their transportation has arrived.

Bus drivers will encourage students to wear their solar eclipse glasses if they look at the sun and will remind students not to wear their solar eclipse glasses when exiting the bus.

There will be no recess or outside activities of any kind (other than viewing the eclipse for educational purposes) between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM.

If your child stays home on Monday for educational purposes to watch the eclipse, please send a note to school, as this educational opportunity will be an excused absence. Picking up your child early from school as an additional precaution will be permitted.

Please help us in educating your child about the dangers of looking at the sun during an eclipse.

Thank you for your understanding and support of our efforts to ensure student safety during this unique learning experience. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school.
