Parkersburg, WV — Wood County Schools officials have named Joe Mowery as the 2026 Service Personnel of the Year, recognizing his dedication, work ethic, and positive impact on students and staff across the district.
The announcement was made during a recent Board of Education meeting, where administrators highlighted the importance of honoring employees who go above and beyond their day-to-day responsibilities. This year’s selection followed a competitive review process, with 46 applicants considered for the districtwide honor.
Mowery, who joined Wood County Schools in 2023 as a custodian at Franklin Elementary, currently serves at Williamstown Elementary School, where he has worked since 2024. District leaders said he quickly distinguished himself through both his professional performance and his strong relationships within the school community.
“Joe rose to the top of this year’s applicant pool,” officials noted during the presentation, praising his commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students.
Mowery received more than seven nominations, many coming from colleagues at Williamstown Elementary who described him as a dependable and uplifting presence in the building.
Teachers and staff emphasized not only his attention to detail but also his willingness to support others throughout the school day.
“Mr. Joe goes above and beyond to keep our school clean,” wrote one colleague, Bec Morgan. “He takes great pride in his work and is always willing to take time out of his busy day to lend a helping hand to staff or students. My classroom is always so clean since Mr. Joe started working at Williamstown Elementary. We are extremely lucky to have him on our staff.”
Others highlighted Mowery’s positive interactions with students, noting that his contributions extend well beyond custodial duties.
“Joe not only does a fantastic job cleaning our school, but also positively interacts with students,” shared Angela Shawver. “He helps open milk cartons and lunch items in the cafeteria, and he makes sure he’s in the pre-K hallway at dismissal to high-five each child before they head home.”
Colleagues also credited Mowery’s upbeat attitude and ability to build meaningful relationships across the school community.
“Joe brings such a positive and encouraging personality to our school,” said Laurel Joy. “He has very strong relationships with both staff and students while working hard at his job. He is a true asset to Williamstown Elementary.”
District leaders presented the award alongside Superintendent Willis and members of the Board of Education, formally recognizing Mowery’s contributions to Wood County Schools.
The Service Personnel of the Year honor is awarded annually to employees who demonstrate excellence, initiative, and a deep commitment to supporting students and the educational environment.
As this year’s recipient, Mowery embodies those qualities, school officials said, serving as a reminder of the vital role service personnel play in the success of local schools.
