In the wake of the Peoples Cartage Warehouse fire in Parkersburg, Wood County Schools faced an unexpected challenge as the Summer Feeding Program was temporarily interrupted. While district officials worked to safely restore operations, the community immediately stepped forward to ensure that students continued to have access to nutritious meals.
What began as a single meal distribution site quickly became a countywide effort fueled by compassion, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to local children.
The Parkersburg Area Association of Realtors (PAAR) mobilized volunteers to prepare hundreds of brown bag meals for students who rely on the Summer Feeding Program. Community members donated their time to assemble, organize, and distribute meals, demonstrating the power of neighbors helping neighbors during a time of need.
As demand became evident, the volunteer effort rapidly expanded beyond its original location at Cornerstone Gospel Church in Vienna. Additional distribution sites were established at the South Parkersburg Pizza Place on Blizzard Drive and at Williamstown Elementary School, making it easier for families across Wood County to access meals. Volunteers staffed each location, welcoming families and ensuring students continued to receive meals while the district's regular feeding operations were temporarily suspended.
The quick expansion of meal distribution sites reflected the community's determination to meet families where they were and remove barriers to accessing food. It also demonstrated the remarkable coordination between local organizations, businesses, churches, school employees, and volunteers who worked together with a common purpose.
