Wood County Schools have been made aware by the West Virginia Fusion Center of a TikTok trend involving the character The Cat in the Hat. Individuals are using student names and posting The Cat in the Hat videos in an attempt to scare or intimidate students.
The West Virginia Fusion Center advised that this trend has been occurring across the United States. Other West Virginia school districts have also received similar posts.
Wood County Schools has had no reports of this occurring; however, to be proactive, we are sharing the warning about The Cat in the Hat TikTok with families to avoid potential issues in our school system. This message is to encourage our families to talk with their children about the seriousness of posting threatening material on social media. We ask parents/guardians and students who encounter any concerning or threatening posts to report them immediately to local law enforcement and Wood County Schools.
Please be assured that any posts or activity involving threats, intimidation, or the targeting of individuals will be taken seriously, thoroughly investigated, and referred to law enforcement for appropriate action.
Thank you for your continued cooperation and for helping us keep our students and school community safe.
