Wood County Schools is proud to recognize Ashley Smith of Parkersburg South High School for being selected as the 2026 West Virginia History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
The annual honor shines a spotlight on outstanding K–12 educators who inspire students through innovative teaching, a passion for history, and meaningful classroom experiences. Smith’s selection reflects her commitment to helping students understand the connection between America’s past and the civic responsibilities of today.
At Parkersburg South, Smith teaches AP Government and Politics, Dual Credit Civics, and U.S. Studies. Her approach extends well beyond traditional classroom instruction, incorporating hands-on and experiential activities that encourage students to explore historical events, government, and civic life in engaging ways.
Through these experiences, Smith helps students see history not simply as a collection of dates and facts, but as a subject that continues to shape their communities and their role as citizens.
As West Virginia’s honoree, Smith will receive a $1,000 award along with educational resources for her classroom. She will also move forward as West Virginia’s representative in consideration for the 2026 National History Teacher of the Year Award.
